There is no better way to welcome in a new Summer makeup collection than with a flurry of pastel tones and muted soft shades to tantalise your nails, cheeks and lips. So behold the latest releases from the Bourjois Swimming Cool Collection - a pretty range of new products to give your makeup a fresh, Summery flair this season with some new pastel polishes, a collection of innovative cream blushers and the Sweet Kiss lip glosses for a subtle slick of colour

First up is a trio of new nail colours (£5.99 each) from the ever-popular 1 seconde Bourjois nail range. I love these nail varnishes - they have a big flat brush which covers your entire nail in one easy stroke. Two coats and you are done and the colour is always flawless and lasts a good four or five days before chipping. The three new shades are Summer-perfect and I think everyone will fall for at least one of these colours. Firstly there is No. 49 Pink-itude - a classic muted pink. Next up is No. 50 Blue Lagoon which is a pastel turquoise and my personal favourite! Finally there is No. 51 Palm Peach - a pinky-peach with a subtle orange undertone. This would be a fab pedicure colour I think especially against just-back-from-your-holidays tanned skin. So pretty and so pigmented, they are a must for getting your hands and toes completely beach-ready!

The next new launch from Bourjois has gotten me rather excited - it is the lovely Aqua Blush 12hr (£8.99) available in four fresh shades. The formula is sheer and skin-boosting, light in pigment and texture and blends beautifully onto the skin. You can either apply with a makeup brush like a mini kabuki or your fingertips by gently dabbing and smoothing the colour out for a real pop of natural flush. The texture is gel-like with a refreshing, cooling sensation when applied to the skin and all the four shades are very wearable and perfect for a soft, Summer look. The two colours I have used here are 03. Pink Twice and 02. Cocoricorail. The swatches look heavy and scary purely to show you the true colour unblended but with just one pump, gently sheered out, your cheeks will be left with a subtle, pretty tint!

Finally we move onto the lips and the Swimming Cool Collection welcomes in four new shades to the Sweet Kiss lipgloss range (£7.99) with a colour to suit and delight everyone. The Sweet Kiss glosses are shimmer and glitter-free and gives the lips a natural radiance with a boost of hydration. They are slightly sticky so wearing these on a windy day might not be the best idea but for a fresher, quicker option to lipstick they are a lovely light option plus I love the soft brush applicator. Above I am wearing 03. As De Pink (a pretty nude-pink) and 04. Incogni-rose (a rosy, natural pink).

What do you think of this new collection from Bourjois? What fresh releases have you got your eye on?

Three Pamper-Perfect Products

IMG_5017

There is nothing I enjoy more than getting home on a Friday night after a long week at work and beginning my pamper routine. I know, I know, so rock and roll! I'm talking a long LUSH bubble bar, a full body exfoliation, coconut oil hair mask, fresh gel nails and of course, a good ol' face mask to prep my skin for the weekend ahead!

Three lovely new products that have been joining me in the bathroom recently for my weekly pamper sessions are the Clinique Charcoal Mask and the Brightening Moisture Mask along with another charcoal-based addition, the Detoxifying Charcoal Body Scrub from Origins. Clearly charcoal is the new 'it' word when it comes to skincare and if you stay tuned you will see exactly why!

Firstly the Clinique Charcoal Mask* (£23). This is a wonderful solution if you are after a deeper clean to instantly mattify and detox the skin, drawing out all that dirt and those stubborn impurities. Despite its deep cleansing formula this mask is still fairly gentle and doesn't leave your face feeling raw or stripped of moisture. The balance of oil-absorbing clays and charcoal powder with hyaluronic acid prevents dryness whilst giving the skin a fresh, clean feel. The charcoal powder acts like a magnet and draws out all those nasties whereas the Kaolin and Montmorillonite purifies the skin and minimising the appearance of pores. Simply apply liberally all over your face or just over problem areas, leave for 10 minutes then rinse off with warm water. Your complexion afterwards will be glowing and feel incredibly fresh, soft and smooth.

The Origins Detoxifying Charcoal Body Scrub* (£25) acts very similarly to the Clinique Charcoal face mask but has been super-sized and highly-powered to take on your whole body. Again this formula seeks to de-clog your pores whilst sloughing away any dead skin for a thorough deep cleanse. The activated bamboo charcoal helps draw out the dirt and debris from your skin and the rough particles of seas salts and brown sugar exfoliate and smooth your body for a super-soft feeling when you step out the shower. You might think that this body scrub would leave you smelling slightly 'earthy' but the addition of clove and wintergreen leaves means this scrub will give you an invigorated, fresh and clean feeling afterwards.

And finally the Brightening Moisture Mask from Clinique* (£35) is another indulgent option from the brand's Even Better, best-selling franchise. This luxurious mask is great if you are after an injection of hydration, moisture and radiance for your skin. This mask revitalises and hydrates to help restore luminosity and radiance to a lacklustre, dull complexion. It includes Glucosamine which helps reveal smoother, brighter skin and Citrus Unshiu Orange Peel Extract which helps minimise irritation that can lead to darkening. Finally the addition of Licorice extract helps brighten and counteracts dullness. A perfect combination to give your skin a boost at the end of a long week!

Have you tried any of these pamper treats? What face mask are you currently loving?

My First Trimester

11bd3ca39d907fb25812184c28a3d9a8
Wow I cannot believe I have been officially pregnant for over three months and have now entered the ‘second trimester’. Firstly I apologise for the splattering of pregnancy terminology that I will now be slipping into my baby blog posts – it was all so alien to me too only 12 weeks ago but basically a pregnancy is broken down into three trimesters comprising of three months each, so I am now into my second trimester and I have a whole new range of symptoms, changes and emotions to look forward to.

I really wanted to spend some time trying to capture everything, emotionally and physically, I felt during my first three months of pregnancy. I personally love reading about women’s different reactions and responses to pregnancy and I find it fascinating that one woman could be hugging the toilet for the first three months with horrendous morning sickness whilst another one wouldn’t even know she was pregnant. I am sorry to be that woman (pregnant ladies have permission to give me the evil eye) but I have been so  lucky to have had a really easy, breezy first trimester. Apparently only 25% of women escape with no major symptoms following getting pregnant and so far, I am happy to report I am in that minority.

So how did I find out? Well I remember the night clearly – it was a Friday evening and I was home alone. I don’t even really remember what prompted me to pick up a pregnancy test on my way home but obviously I could sense something was different, but I couldn’t pinpoint what. I think when you want a baby so much and a lot of planning goes into making sure you give yourselves the best chance of conceiving, you almost don’t want to jinx yourself by hoping…believing that that ovulation calendar might have actually worked! In hindsight I had actually dismissed the sore boobs and sudden tiredness for a few weeks prior to taking my pregnancy test, thinking it was just down to working too hard, my new boot camp classes and that time of the month! So when it came to actually taking the test I was very dismissive. I was blasé about it all as I just didn’t dare get my hopes up. In fact I almost throw the test away when I only saw one solitary blue line appears and my heart sank. But then something stopped me in my tracks – was that a second blue line developing? It was faint but I was pretty sure it was there. I turned on a few more lights in the house for a closer inspection. It was now I was cursing myself for buying the Tesco’s own cheap-y tests rather than the all-singing-all-dancing fancy ones. Looking at the two blue lines I was still unconvinced. Half of me wanted to believe it so much but the other half of me, the more rational and controlled side, couldn’t help but think it was a mistake. I decided to sleep on it and take the other test in the morning but that night I couldn’t help but start thinking about baby names and colour schemes for the nursery - my mind was racing. To cut a long story short, the second test pretty much confirmed that I was with child but still a little dubious I headed out to purchase a box of those fancy Clearblue pregnancy tests that tell you how many weeks you are gone and it transpired that I was not just a little bit pregnant, I was six weeks pregnant!

Keeping it a secret. Every mother-to-be knows that the first three months of pregnancy can be an unexpected time where things don’t always go to plan and sometimes that moment of joy and happiness can be cruelly snatched away from you. I was of course worried but vowed not to let it consume me – I had unknowingly gotten through six weeks of pregnancy problem-free and I decided to just carry on as normal (as normal as you can when you know you are growing a tiny human inside you). I carried on my exercise, ate my normal diet (with a few tweaks of course…man, I miss Goats Cheese!) and tried to maintain my happy, positive persona believing this was going to be best for me and the baby. We confided in a few close friends along the way but kept our secret close until after our 12 week scan (more on that later). It was only then that we officially told our parents, family and friends and I felt like a great weight had been lifted off our shoulders. For us it was the right decision to keep it such a guarded secret, even though at times I felt like I was lying to my mum, “No, sorry I can’t have a drink, I’m on…antibiotics!”, and it made that moment when we told them, complete with our baby picture, all that more special.

The scan. This is the first milestone that I think every mother-to-be focuses on the moment those two blue lines appear in front of them. This takes place anytime between 11weeks + 2days and 14 weeks and we were so thrilled to have our scan all booked in for three days before our wedding anniversary. I told myself that if everything was ok at that scan then this would be the best one year wedding anniversary present I could ever wish for. Understandably I was pretty nervous before the scan. Having spent the last 12 weeks feeling very un-pregnant with no symptoms whatsoever, it was very hard to convince myself that I was carrying something the size of a plum inside of me. We were called in just before 9am and I took my position on the couch with Rob gripping my hand next to me and a blank screen just above us. My heart was racing, my bladder uncomfortably full to help the sonographer get a clear picture and all I could think was “please, please”. And then the screen flicked on and our baby was there in front of us, just wiggling about and kicking its legs as much to say, “See, you didn’t need to worry Mum”. We just grinned and grinned and watched him/her dance around, responding to every cough and hip-shake I had to perform to make him uncurl, whilst the sonographer took measurements and photos. Just to hear those words, “You have one baby with one healthy heartbeat” was the most comforting message and I now felt like I had a connection with my child. They were real, there in black and white.

Symptoms. As I mentioned I have had a really nice first trimester with no awful symptoms or problems whatsoever. I feel extremely fortunate but really hope any other mums-to-be reading this, who are having a tough time of it, don’t think I am being smug or superior at all. There were times I wished I felt the waves of nausea or had gone off my favourite food as it might have helped confirm along the way that I was actually pregnant and make me worry a little less! So apart from the sore boobs that marginally enlarged momentarily around week 6 to 7, (yep, the excitement of cracking into a B cup was short-lived!)  and the utter exhaustion during week 7 and 8, I have felt just like me. My appetite has probably slightly decreased and I feel full a lot sooner so little snacks are my friend rather than whopping huge meals. My skin, hair and nails are loving pregnancy at the moment with my hair feeling thicker and glossier than ever, nails that won’t stop growing and skin that has cleared up a lot – I am not saying I am glowing yet but I am hopefully on my way!!

My body is changing. Selfishly, I think the thing that I was always most worried about when I got pregnant was how much my body would change and how I would feel and adjust to this inevitable transformation! As someone who has always worked hard at maintaining a healthy, slim physique through lots of exercises and good food choices, it scared me to think I would ultimately be getting bigger - something I have always fought against. The bigger boobs I can just about handle (although running has never been so painful and uncomfortable) but seeing my belly change from flat and toned to slightly curved and definitely softer is a strange experience. Of course I find it fascinating and am totally embracing whatever my body needs to do to grow this happy baby, but it will be a strange and revealing experience I think.

Keeping fit. The moment I found out I was pregnant I had a list as long as my arm of burning questions I had to find the answer to. Once I knew what supplements I needed to be taking, what foods I should avoid and the best creams to prevent stretch marks, I was left googling all things relating to exercise and fitness whilst pregnant. As such an active person who would be doing boot camp, insanity classes, running or playing hockey most days of the week it worried me a little bit that I might have to slow down and stop my favourite activities. But of course keeping active is key to a healthy pregnancy and a lot of the advice I read seemed to suggest that if you were active and fit before your pregnancy then you could carry on doing what you were doing, with slight modifications. Obviously contact and dangerous sports are a no no so I have decided I won’t be playing hockey again this season as I have witnessed too many injuries on the pitch to feel comfortable doing that but I have continued with my other exercises religiously since finding out I was pregnant. Luckily I haven’t suffered from any real tiredness or sluggishness apart from a slight dip in energy around week 7 so have felt fine to continue. I think the main thing is to listen to your body and if I get home and just want to slump on the sofa and eat gherkins dipped in chocolate sauce (I pray I get no weird cravings like that!) then I blooming well will. But whilst I feel so spritely I want to take advantage of my minimal bump and high energy levels and enjoy working out as for me, it is the greatest stress reliever and makes me feel so good! I am aware that as my body changes, my bump starts to grow and I feel the pressure more on my joints I will have to slow down and maybe look at doing some softer activities which I am quite excited about really. Swimming and yoga are great options for pregnant ladies so I am already investigating local classes I can pop along to. But hey, if Paula Radcliffe can run a marathon when she is 7 months pregnant then there is hope for us all…I just won’t be out to set any new PBs.

I honestly think I could go on and on about everything that has occurred over the past three months but I fear I might have already lost most of you somewhere between sore boobs and full bladders. If you are still with me then I applaud you! I hope you have enjoyed a little insight into my first trimester and all the exciting and revealing things I have discovered about being pregnant. I plan to keep these updates quite frequent, maybe every two to three weeks, so I can capture all the little and big things that happen along the way. I also having a little little baby haul to share with you as well so stay tuned for cute baby grows and teeny tiny converse shoes!

Line your lashes with colour! NEW Eyeliner Pens from YSL* in 02. Majorelle Blue and 04. Deep Green (£25.50) | available online

Coloured liners and mascaras are big news this Summer, giving the retro trend a fresh, modern and high fashion feel. The 90s trend of colbalt blue mascara is well and truly back and I was excited, if a little nervous, to embrace this look all over again and relive my teenage years! Along with a rainbow of mascaras being released by a medley of makeup brands, the humble black eyeliner has also been given a colour revival and Yves Saint Laurent Beaute Summer collection, Les Sahariennes, gives us two striking new products to delight our eyes.

The YSL Shocking Faux Cils Felt-Tip Eyeliner Pen is a fabulous product and I often reach for the boring black version time and time again when I am looking to perfect that feline catseye flick. I always favour a felt tip eyeliner as opposed to a gel or liquid as I feel I have a little bit more control and can build up the itensity and definition easier than with a more looser formula. These two new colourways give the traditional look of lined eyes a colourful twist whether you are looking for a slick of something bold and blue, or a striking rich emerald-green flick. The precise firm tip of these felt-tip like pens ensures your line is thin and subtle giving you the ability to keep it low key and understated or built up to something thicker and more show-stopping! The pigmentation is great with these two new eyeliners and they seem to last and last without smudging or budging throughout the day.

For weekend festivals and alfresco parties this is the type of fun, Summer makeup I love to try and it really isn't as scary as you first may think! It is the perfect way to inject a bit of colour and freshness into your Summer look. Have you embraced the coloured liner trend yet?

Claudia Louch Mousse Foundation

IMG_5050
IMG_5058
A foundation that feels as light as air! Claudia Louch Mousse Foundation* (£52.50) | available online

You may have noticed that over the past year or so I have featured quite a few skincare products from the Claudia Louch beauty line - a brand that takes a natural, holistic approach to skincare all the way from their moisturisers to makeup, and continues to impress me with their range of products that seem to do the job perfectly.

After the success of their skincare line, Claudia Louch have introduced an ever-expanding makeup range which includes a variety of bases, concealers, mascara and powders. Most recently I have been testing out the new Mousse Foundation which is wonderfully light to apply and feels like silk on the skin. It has a velvet texture and easily smoothes onto the skin, covering any redness or small blemishes without being mask-like. In fact it is a very light foundation but has a lovely ability of evening out skin tone and softening fine lines with the addition of the light-diffusing particles. The result is pretty natural, soft and shine-free although I did find that a sweep of powder over the top did help set the foundation and give me a little more coverage. I think if you have a normal or oily skin type then this foundation would work well for you but those dry-skinned girls might want to stay clear as it does have a habit of clinging to any dry bits of skin which is a shame. As you would expect from Claudia Louch, the Mousse Foundation is 94% natural, hypoallergenic and allergy tested and is free from fragrance and harsh chemicals.

Have you tried anything from the Claudia Louch makeup range?

The Tan-Enhancing Body Oils

IMG_5079
IMG_5067
If I am jetting off to sunnier climates over the summer then a beauty essential that I always find myself packing in my suitcase is a good dry body oil. There is no nicer feeling than coating your sun-kissed limbs with a luminous body oil to enhance your golden tan and help lock in that much needed hydration. With a possible sunny retreat scheduled for late September I have already lined up two of my favourite beauty-enhancing oils that I look forward to taking away with me to give my bare skin a luminous glow as I head out for cocktails mocktails and dinner during the balmy nights.

First up is the Moroccan Rose Gold Glow Perfect Dry Oil* from REN Skincare (£26). This dry oil is really exquisite and is formulated with 100% naturally derived actives from Moroccan Argan Oil and the precious Rosa Damascena Oil. The texture is very lightweight and silky and nourishes, conditions and protects the skin leaving it with a beautiful sheen. It can also be used on your hair to lock in moisture and keep it healthy in the sun. I love the handy spray bottle and adore the elaborately decorated bottle featuring a distinctive Arabesque design inspired by Islamic art and calligraphy. It has a delicate rose scent which lingers on your skin and sinks in well without leaving you feeling greasy or slippery! I like to apply this straight after a shower when my skin is still slightly damp - it smoothes wonderfully over your body and leaves it feeling sublimely soft and nourished with a golden, glowing sheen.

The other dry oil I have been loving is the Clarins After Sun Shimmer Oil* (£32) which works very similarly to the REN Moroccan Rose but has the added benefit of some lovely, subtle shimmer for the skin. Suitable for all skin types, this oil is ultra-fine and infused with shimmery micro-pearls for a head-turning tan. It nourishes, softens and illuminates the skin with a sensational golden gleam. Formulated using hazelnut oil, this oil doesn't only keep your skin looking good but will also help protect it from dehydration following sun exposure with the added vitamin E and essential oils. This aftersun oil is basically Summer in a bottle with the addition of mandarin, grapefruit, ylang ylang and tonka beans to give the skin a sunny scent and it can also be used on the ends of your hair to keep it in tip-top condition throughout your holiday. I love the lusciousness of this oil from Clarins and the golden iridescence it gives to the skin really enhances your tan and veils your body with a satin-smooth, fragrant finish, without any greasy residue!

Do you have a favourite body oil you like to use during the Summer?
