The battle of the moisturisers

IMG_2436
IMG_2451
IMG_2452

Earlier this month QVC launched their Customer Beauty Awards for another year running, inviting their loyal viewers to vote for their favourite beauty and hair products. The best foundation, haircare essential, facial cleanser and makeup must have are just a sample of the various categories the QVC customers could vote on and now the results are in, you can take a look at the winners here.

I was invited to trial the four contenders up for the accolade of best moisturiser and to see if my opinion matched the viewers' vote! So over the past couple of weeks I've been sniffing, sampling and slathering myself with a multitude of moisturisers to see which one I think should be crowned the winner and here are my thoughts. L'Occitane Immortelle Divine Cream is a luxurious moisturiser that combines organic Immortelle with Myrtle essential oils to help regenerate the skin and reduce the appearance of premature ageing. With a fresh scent, a tiny spatula to aid application and a gorgeous golden bottle to boot, this is a really pleasant moisturiser to use and my skin felt soft and radiant afterwards but my only hesitation would be the price. At £65 it is a little steep and I feel there are other moisturisers out there that could do just a good job, for a more purse-friendly price. Which leads me onto Elemis Pro-Collagen Marine Cream which is ever so slightly cheaper at £50 a tub! This moisturiser already boasts a multitude of awards and best-selling triumphs so I definitely had high hopes. It is designed to increase hydration and promote a dramatic increase in skin firmness and elasticity whilst reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Light, non-greasy and naturally-scented, the pro-collagen cream does exactly what it says on the tub and gives your skin a glorious boost of hydration leaving it soft and smooth in the morning. A definite thumbs up from me.

The third moisturiser I tested was the Liz Earle Superskin Moisturiser which targets dry skin, replenishes lost moisture and revitalises your complexion. I had previously sampled this moisturiser so knew I loved the soothing quality from the pure plant oils and the way it really nourishes my skin. It makes a great night cream and is delicate enough to use on sensitive skin too but the only one downside unfortunately is the scent! Finally, the fourth moisturiser to be put to the test was Lulu's Time Bomb Flashback Night Cream which was the most affordable moisturiser from the shortlist at £33 a tub. I had never tried anything from the Lulu skincare range before so was interested to see how this product fared. The super-rich formula drenches skin in soothing oils and botanicals to create a fine barrier on the skin whilst you sleep, leaving you with plumper, dewier and well rested skin in the morning. I thought this product was nice but it didn't wow me like I hoped it would. I think the formula was a little too heavy on my skin but was generally pleasant to use and did give my skin a plumper, smoother feel to it after a few nights of use.

So based on my slathering and sampling over the past few weeks I would crown the Elemis Pro-Collagen Marine Cream my winner with the Liz Earle Superskin coming in a close second. The results show that the QVC customers also voted the Elemis moisturiser their number choice so great minds think alike, hey? Have you tried any of these moisturisers? Which is your favourite?

MAC Creme Cup lipstick £15
available in MAC stores and online

With such a bountiful collection of MAC lipsticks, I sometimes surprise myself that I don't own some of the more 'classic' shades. Creme Cup is my most recent lipstick purchase and I cannot work out why it has taken me so long to take notice of this gorgeous shade. Creme Cup is a cremesheen lipstick so has that lovely, glossy finish on the lips, a creamy consistency to apply with a strong colour payoff. As a soft, dusky pink it is a very safe colour to wear day or night and gives you a lovely neutral pink lip if you wanted to pair it with a more dramatic eye look. It is definitely a lipstick I think most girls need in their collection!

Do you love Creme Cup too?

A Perfect Partnership: Vichy Dermablend foundation & Real Techniques miracle complexion sponge

IMG_4239
IMG_3647

Vichy Dermablend Corrective Foundation £15.50 available from Boots
Real Techniques miracle complexion sponge* £4.99 available in Boots/Superdrug from September 2013

With a muji-full of various foundations and an overflowing collection of brushes and buffing-implements, it it rare for me to go more than a week without switching up my foundation-applicator-combination. However recently I have stumbled across a winning partnership that has featured relentlessly in my morning makeup routine.

I always use to be a slave to my foundation brushes, and was never fussed by sponges or beauty blenders, but I believe the Real Techniques miracle complexion sponge may have changed my opinion ever so slightly. This uniquely designed sponge has three distinct surfaces giving you three different ways to apply your foundation. The rounded sides are great for blending in foundation on larger areas of the face by using a stippling or dabbing motion. The precision tip is ideal for applying a more concentrated layer of foundation over blemishes and imperfections and the flat edge works wonders over the contours of your face; around your eyes and nose for example. In all honesty, I tend to just use the rounded and flat sides on this sponge and love the way is makes your foundation blend in flawlessly with a smooth, even finish.

The other half of this perfect pairing is my Vichy Dermablend Corrective Foundation (25 Nude). Marketed as a camouflage foundation that can cover the most severe skin flaws, redness and uneven skintone, I feel I should confess now that I don't suffer from any of the above particularly badly. Dark circles yes, and a slightly uneven complexion at times, but I don't necessarily need this foundation and all its optimal-coverage claims. However I think you can still use this foundation if you are just after a lovely, flawless base, long-lasting results with a skin-friendly formula. I literally use the tiniest pea-sized amount on the back of my hand, blended in with my Real Techniques sponge and the result I get feels a lot lighter and fresher than some of the other, 'full coverage' foundations I've tried - namely MAC Studio Fix Fluid and Estee Lauder Double Wear. No horrible mask-effect but a great coverage meaning no concealer required! Great if you are trying to minimise your base products during the hot summer days.

Which foundations are you loving at the moment? Are you excited about the Real Techniques sponge being released in a few months?

Estee Lauder Pure Color Cheek Rush Cello Shots

wearing  x-pose rose on my cheeks

Estee Lauder Pure Color Cheek Rush* £24
available online

The new Cello Shots collection for Estee Lauder could possibly be one of their most playful launches to date with a range of lipsticks, glosses and cheek gels giving you a vibrant flush of colour with watery-like finish. These new cheek rush products are so unique and fun and seem to fill that void between a cream blush and a liquid cheek stain. The little pump dispenser delivers a consistency that is gel-like and extremely intense but the water-based colour is easily sheered out or built up depending on how vibrant you want it! The top tip when it comes to applying these blusher shots is to blend quickly as they do dry pretty fast and subsequently stain the skin (and do not budge!) My arm of swatches is a testament to this!

I like to dab the colour onto my cheeks using my finger and add another layer if necessary. They are incredibly long-lasting and beautifully dewy which is perfect if you are enjoying a lighter, fresh-faced look over the Summer. The texture is quite unusually but is lovely and silky to use and gives your cheeks a pop of juicy colour and a shot of hydration. The cheek rushes are completely oil-free so never end up looking greasy on your skin and contain an infusion of natural extracts and moisturising ingredients. My favourite from this trio is x-pose rose as it gives you a gorgeous, rosy glow but pink patent is pretty lovely too for a more subtle baby-pink flush.

Have you got your eye on anything from the Cello Shots collection?

New Essie nail polishes

3 for 2 at Superdrug £7.99 each!
It would be rude not to...

A sunny Friday lunchtime can only mean one thing; a chilled mango and Passionfruit frappe and a stalk of my favourite beauty aisles before heading back to work. Rumour on the beauty grapevine was that Superdrug were offering 3 for 2 across all their nail polish brands so I naturally made a beeline for my local store and promptly ended up face to face with the glorious sight of Essie. I really like Essie polishes and think they are completely worth their price tag, just for the names alone! The quality and range of shades is pretty unmatchable when it comes to Essie polishes and after much deliberation I had chosen my final three.

"The More the Merrier" is a new shade from their Summer 2013 collection and is an awesome bright lime green shade that isn't too neon but is perfectly vibrant after just two coats. "Fiji" is a classic Essie shade that every blogger and their mum raves about. It is a very simple, clean pale pink colour that isn't too stark but ultra sophisticated and would look marvellous with a tan! To complete my trio of talon tantalisers, I picked up "Peach Daiquiri" which is beautiful all the way from bottle to nail. It is a bright, creamy-coral shade that just screams cocktails on the beach and will make a flip-flop worthy pedicure colour for many a barbecues this summer! Definitely my favourite of the three!

Which is your favourite Essie shade?

MAC In Synch Lip Pencil

Necklace from Topshop, isn't it a beaut!

MAC Cosmetics Lip Pencil in In Synch £12
available online

A couple of weeks ago the new MAC Pro store opened in the heart of London's Covent Garden and I was lucky enough to be invited along to the preview party, meaning endless cocktails, canapes and a cool 35% off all purchases on the night! I don't know which I was excited about more but with a mojito in hand I decided to seize the opportunity and pick up a few pieces that had been loitering on my wishlist for some time. Along with Candy Yum Yum and yet another nude lipstick, I decided to add a second lip pencil to my collection to join the ranks alongside one of favourite reds, Cherry lip pencil.

In Synch is a lovely milky peachy-pink with slight yellow undertones that can be worn all over the lips as above, or simply used to line the lips in preparation for another nude or light pink lip colour. In Synch isn't overly creamy so it is best to use a lip balm before applying it and then leave it au naturel and matte or finish with a layer of gloss - my favourite at the moment is Partial to Pink from MAC, a soft baby-pink cremesheen. A match made in peachy-pink heaven! I seriously love this shade and will definitely be paying more attention to the other possible lip-pencil-contenders next time I am passing a MAC store.

Have you tried any of the lip pencils from MAC? Which are your favourites?

Cami vest top - Topshop
Skirt - Topshop
Pink lips bag* - TK Maxx
Pumps - Primark
Collar - H&M
Aviators - Topshop

After going through a phase of routinely avoiding Topshop for the sake of my purse, I have now spectacularly fallen off the wagon and desperately want to buy everything in store! The latest few pieces I have picked up include this gorgeous blush-pink skater skirt with an embroidered-flower overlay and a sweet, belly-button-skimming cami which also comes in an assortment of bright and pastel colours that are perfect for Summer. I also succumbed to a few of their new dresses and a selection of Topshop's adorable, frilly socks for ultimate granny-chic styling, so no doubt I will be featuring all these new bits in the coming weeks.

Continuing with the pink theme (why shy away?) I took my new Lulu Guinness handbag courtesy of TK Maxx out for a spin. I always knew TK Maxx was renown for great brands at crazily low prices but until I started sifting through their bag collection online, I didn't realise actually how awesome the discounts were - probably because my local store has always been a little disappointing. I was going to save my bag for an evening occasion and tote it around an oversized clutch but I figured it would work just as well as a daytime bag whilst I grab a quick coffee in town and enjoy the sunshine in the park.

I hope you are all well and having lovely weekends. Let me know if you have found any great bargains from TK Maxx recently?

MAC Morange lipstick

MAC Morange lipstick £15
available online

My lipstick collection is completely satutated with various shades of pinks, reds and nudes...but orange lipsticks, that's an area that I haven't really ventured into until recently. MAC Morange seemed the obvious choice when taking this initial plunge with its Amplified Creme base and mix of burnt-orange and vibrant red tones. As subtle step away from your classic reds and into the orange spectrum, Morange is perfect. It isn't too oompa loompa and is still very wearable but has a lovely orange tint to it that makes it unique and exciting to wear. It is definitely one of those lipsticks that begs for simple, toned-down makeup elsewhere so I kept the rest of my face fairly natural with a sweep of bronzer and lashings of mascara.

Are you a fan of the orange lips? Which other orange lipsticks would you recommend for me?

Clarins Splendours Colour Quartet and Liner Eye Palette

Clarins Limited Edition Splendours Eye Palette* £31
available online

I have been meaning to gush about this eye palette from Clarins ever since the Summer Splendours collection came out in April but I couldn't find the words to describe just how lovely it is. The collection's inspirational aztec designs and South American influences are embossed on the individual eyeshadows which are all so easy to wear and compliment each other perfectly. There is a rich gold, a pearly white, a maroon-bronze and a pink rose-gold shadow accompanied by a waxy, creamy eyeliner with a deep plum tint to it. All the shadows are incredibly silky to apply and blend nicely together whether you are after a subtle wash of colour or a more defined, intense finish.

Above I used the pearly-white shade to highlight along my brow bone and in the corner of my eye and then buffed the pinky-gold shadow all over my eye lid. To add some definition, I completed the look by blending the gold into my outer corner and then added the maroon shade over the top to darken the edges. I wouldn't say these shadows are super pigmented but are very easily buildable if you wanted a heavier look. But for me, the subtle bronze-shadow-lover that I am, this palette is perfect as it contains all my favourite eyeshadow shades along with the eyeliner which is so smooth to use and has a gorgeous, dark purple tone to it. As a palette to take out and about with you or away for a week's holiday, the Clarins Splendours Quartet palette is pretty much ideal and it is just a shame that it is limited edition. So if you are a bronzey-gold shadow lover like me, then you had better get your hands on this quick!

What are your thoughts on this eye palette?

Dolly Bow Bow floral crowns

libby floral head crown
summer spirit floral crown

Pretty floral crowns* (£15) from Dolly Bow Bow

Demins shorts? Check! Floaty fabrics? Check! Oversized accessories? Check! My festival-slash-Summertime outfits are slowly coming together but there was just one thing missing...some flowers in my hair, and these floral crowns from Dolly Bow Bow are seriously beautiful and pretty much perfect for some summer lovin'. There are a whole host of dreamy colours and styles on Kate's website but these were the two that caught my eye instantly. The libby floral head crown is styled on an adjustable band so can be worn as a head band or as a halo of roses by positioning the crown slightly more forward on your head. It was a tough choice between the pink (pictured above), the lilac or the fuchsia, but I love the light petal-pink shade of this one and think it would make a lovely contrast on darker hair. The summer spirit floral crown encapsulates all the happiness and joy of Summer with the random array of brightly coloured flowers suspended on a typical metal hairband. This is by far my favourite floral crown (ever!) and easily jazzes up a simple outfit with a flash of pastel-colour and prettiness. Whether I'm off to a barbecue, festival or wedding this Summer, it is more than likely I will be sporting a floral crown for the occasion!

Bourjois Vintage Rose Candle

bourjois vintage candle

Bourjois limited edition vintage rose candle* £9.99
exclusively available from Selfridges

It is crazy to think that Bourjois and their little round pots of blush have been around for 150 years now! To celebrate this epic anniversary Bourjois, the beauty brand born in belle Paris back in 1863, have released a limited edition vintage candle. Exclusively available from Selfridges online, this dusky-pink celebratory candle is adorned with the silhouette of Bourjois' first muse from twenties, Babette - an imaginary heroine whose adventures formed short stories published in the press and captured the dreams of women from the era. Not only does this candle look incredibly sweet placed by a vanity mirror or on my beside table, but it smells beautifully of roses (and a little like parma violets)! Sugary, powdery, floral and completely reminiscent of the scent of Bourjois' iconic blush, this candle is so dainty and sweet I think it will sell out pretty quick, so you can order your one here if you like the flowery scent of roses as much as me.

Happy anniversary Bourjois! x

Tropical Print Tailored Jacket* - Lavish Alice
Lace top - Primark
Jamie Jeans - Topshop
Belt - H&M
Shoes - Primark
Necklace - Accessorize
Aviators - H&M

Oh weather, how you're spoiling us! It is fair to say that it reached tropical heights this weekend here in England so there was no finer excuse to whip out this gorgeous tropical print jacket from Lavish Alice and enjoy a leisurely walk by the river. The colours are so bright and summery, it was crying out to me when I spied it on their website a few weeks ago. I love the three-quarter length sleeves with the contrasting, silk trim and the slightly cinched waist but I think the matching shorts would have been a better call today rather than my skinny jeans! #hotlegs

Have you been out and about today enjoying the lovely weather?

wearing Orange Punch on my lips!
Bourjois Colour Boost lip crayons* £7.99
Launching on 10th July, available from Boots and Superdrug

First came the chubby stick from Clinique, next came Revlon's Just Bitten Kissable balm stains and a few cheeky imitations featured somewhere in between but now Bourjois have released their version of this popular lipstick format - the Colour Boost lip crayon and I think they are going to be a big hit this Summer! All the four shades, from red, fuchsia through to coral and peach, are completely glossy yet superbly pigmented and give your lips a rich, luscious finish. The texture is smooth and easy to apply but doesn't feel sticky or heavy like some lipglosses can. I simply love these lip crayons and find them incredibly moisturising and long-lasting as well as practical with their SPF15 protection. I thought I was going to love "Peach on the Beach" the most, and it is a lovely peachy-pink shade, but "Orange Punch" has won me over with its juicy, tropical-coral colour and gorgeous shine. It is quite unique and a definite must-have for the makeup bag this Summer.

Will you be checking up these new lip crayons from Bourjois?
